Souvenir jackets (Sukajan) originated shortly after the war when American soldiers stationed in Japan had oriental patterns (eagles, tigers, dragons) and the names of their units and bases embroidered on their jackets as a memento.
These were commercialized as souvenirs and sold at PXs (Post Exchanges, the general term for stores within US military bases) throughout the country.
At the time, the company that supplied these souvenir jackets and other clothing to the US military bases was Kosho & Co., the predecessor of Tailor Toyo (Toyo Enterprises), and in the 1950s, when the production of souvenir jackets was at its peak, it held a 95 percent share of the supply.
TAILOR TOYO (Tailor Toyo) has been making souvenir jackets for over half a century, starting with Kosho. This brand, which continues to pass on Sukajan as a culture, not just a passing trend, is the original of Sukajan.

This model is Lot No. TT15542-119 / Early 1950s Style Acetate Souvenir Jacket “JAPAN MAP” × “GOLD DRAGON”.
The front features a Japan map pattern with a condensed view of Japan's beautiful scenery, including Mount Fuji, a five-story pagoda, cherry blossoms, pine trees, and torii gates.
It reproduces a vintage piece from the early 1950s, and it is characterized by its luxurious specifications with little plain space and the entire back covered in embroidery.
The white-based Japanese map and motifs stand out against the black body, and the green ribs and red and white rope piping add an excellent accent.
The reversible side features a grand design of a golden dragon dancing on a blue body reminiscent of a clear sky. In contrast to the front, the embroidery has an exquisite balance that makes good use of negative space.
The dragon and tiger on the chest have the same design as the front, but if you look closely, the color threads used are different.
This is because the vintage pieces were made using the same embroidery pattern on both sides, and you can see the attention to detail of the embroidery craftsmen at the time, who changed the colors to match the fabric color, even with the same design.
